Preparations are well underway for the 33rd edition of Umkhosi Womhlanga that will take place in Nongoma. Celebrations will run from 8 to 10 September 2017. The reeds that will be carried by maidens have already been collected from eHabeni.
An integrated security plan which involves RTI conducting vehicle inspections at departure and key points is in place. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture has secured 75 buses that will transport maidens; municipalities providing their own transport have been advised to vet driver’s records, verify PDP’s and ensure the vehicles are roadworthy. This year’s educational program comprises of human trafficking, substance abuse, safe use of social networks, being a responsible citizen as well as hygiene and health workshops. There will also be career and craft exhibitions.
Maidens from Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and Swaziland are expected to attend proceedings. All maidens participating in the celebration have been required to submit indemnity forms. Build up activities themed ‘siyaya emhlangeni’ have already taken place in all districts. The events serve as a platform for the Queens to interact with maidens on what they are expected to wear at the main celebration, to teach them amahubo and to encourage maidens that are not yet eligible to attend uMkhosi Womhlanga to remain pure.
